MARGARET SANGER:
Radiant Rebel
A 90-minute Two-part Play
From the Letters, Writings, and Diaries of Margaret Sanger
Written and performed by Miriam Reed

Part I: 1940 As she lectured and toured throughout the United States, Europe,
and Asia, meeting with Gandhi and heads of states, Margaret Sanger
changed world views on birth control, advocating not abortion, but prevention,
and giving women the ultimate control over their lives by teaching them practical
birth control methods.

Part II: 1916 Seeing endless numbers of poverty-stricken women subjected to
destructive pregnancies drove the young Margaret Sanger to defy the brutal
Comstock laws. Her defiance cost her home and family, but her vision became
the basis of Planned Parenthood, the international organization that has counseled
four generations of women on birth control.

RE: Your UCLA Performance, January 20, 2005
Dear Dr. Reed,
I am writing to express our gratitude for your presentation of Part II of your outstanding
one-woman performance, Margaret Sanger: Radiant Rebel to the women's community
at UCLA.

From what I understand, the text of your performance is based on primary research and
on the writings of Margaret Sanger. This poignant story of SangerÍs embrace of her
life work--to ensure that every child is wanted--captured our audience.æ It was as if you
ñbecameî Margaret Sanger in manner, in dress, and in words; you gave a remarkable
performance.

We really appreciate that you were able to stay after the show for the lengthy question
and answer session. Your intelligent and thoughtful responses to questions raised by the
audience gave added value to the overall performance and I should tell you that
we heard many good comments from students and faculty long after you left us
.
In all it was an excellent program, and you are a very talented woman.
Thank you again.
Sincerely,
Regina F. Lark, Ph.D.
Assistant Director, UCLA Center for the Study of Women

To Whom: It May Concern:
I had the privilege of spending a day with Miriam Reed before her performance of
Margaret Sanger; Radiant Rebel in Oklahoma, which was part of our 2005
commemoration of the anniversary of the landmark Roe v. Wade Supreme Court decision.
I was a bit nervous beforehand because I had heard through the Planned Parenthood
grapevine that Ms. Reed seemed to îchannelî the spirit of Margaret
Sanger. What I found was a charming, incredibly knowledgeable professional
committed to educating the public about one of the twentieth centuryÍs most
important agents of social change.

In order to write Radiant Rebel and create a credible portrayal of Margaret Sanger, Miriam
Reed spent countless hours reading not only the volumes written about
Sanger, but also the many speeches, letters, books, articles, and diaries written by
Sanger. Best of all, she researched the historical/political context in which Sanger lived
I can think of no one more qualified than Mrs. Reed to ñchannelî the spirit of the<
br> mother of the family planning movement.
The performance that evening was more than I imagined it could be. It was entertaining,
educational, and inspirational. Ms. Reed offered such insight into the life and
personality of Margaret Sanger. The younger people in the audience related to
SangerÍs tenacity and courage. The older people in the audience connected with the
personal struggles and commitment of a woman who was ahead of her time. The rest
of us were motivated to guarantee that our children and grandchildren retain the
reproductive health and rights that Margaret Sanger envisioned and worked so tirelessly
to ensure.

I highly recommend Miriam Reed and Margaret Sanger: Radiant Rebel to any group
interested in history, civil rights, health care, womenÍs studies, playwriting,
reproductive self-determination, law, sociology, or the performing arts. It is an
opportunity you shouldnÍt miss!
Sincerely,
